12 Best VLC Media Player Tips & Tricks

In this tutorial we will be uncovering some of the best tips & tricks you can use to take full benefit of your VLC Media Player.

0. Open VLC with Run

The first tip I’m going to share with you is the command vlc in Run for quick access.

1. Convert Video & Audio Files in VLC

It’s one of the best useful features on VLC, you can convert any media file using this amazing media player.

I already made a tutorial on How to Convert Any Video/Audio File Using VLC that you can follow.

2. Play/Download YouTube Videos in VLC

In order to play/download, your YouTube videos go to “Media” > “Open Network Stream…

Paste the URL of the video… Click to “Play“.

Or you can click on the arrow and choose “Convert” to download.

3. Record A Currently Playing Video/Audio in VLC

To record a video while it’s playing just click on the red circle button.

4. Double Or Slow Down The Playback Speed in VLC

You can change the speed of your playback by going to “Playback” > “Speed” then choose the speed you want.

5. Record Your Screen and Audio in VLC

Forget about recording software, you can use VLC!

Go to “Media” > “Convert / Save“.

Go to “Capture Device” tab and choose Desktop on Capture mode.

Put in 30.00 f/s and click on “Convert / Save“.

Choose MP4 profile, the Destination file, and click on “Start“.

You can stop recording by clicking the stop button.

6. Record Webcam and Audio in VLC

To record your Webcam go to “Media” > “Open Capture Device“.

On the tab “Capture Device” choose DirectShow in Capture mode and select your Webcam and Microphone. Click on the “Play” button.

7. Remote Control VLC From A Web Browser in VLC

Now let’s see how to control your VLC from a browser.

Go to “Tools” > “Preferences“.

Select “All” in Show settings at the bottom.

Go to Main interfaces and select “Web“.

Go to “Lua” and enter your Lua HTTP Password. Click “Save“.

Close VLC and reopen it.

After restarting VLC click “Allow access“.

Open your browser and access this URL http://127.0.0.1:8080

Enter your password and click “Sign in“.

Now you can control your VLC from your Google Chrome browser.

8. Effects and Filters in VLC

You can access some amazing effects in VLC, go to “Tools” > “Effects and Filters“.

There are both Audio Effects and Video Effects, it’s time for you to be creative.

9. Play Internet Radio in VLC

You can access a list of internet radios by clicking on “Icecast Radio Directory” in the “Internet” Section.

10. Add a Watermark to Your Video in VLC

You can add a logo from “Video Effects” > “Overlay“.

You can position it as you wish. The logo should be a PNG for transparency.

11. Take a Snapshot in VLC

You can take screenshots with the shortcut Shift+S.

12. Add Subtitles in VLC

You can add subtitles to your movie by going to “Subtitle” > “Add Subtitle File“.
